Among all the award shows for music, dance, film, etc. one of the biggest awards just passed. The Golden Globes are dedicated to recognizing the year’s greatest films and the hard-working people behind them. When we watch films, it is often easy to attribute all the successes to the actors we see on the big screen, but there are so many people whom we only see recognized for half a second in the end credits. The Golden Globes have presented the opportunity to properly thank not only the actors and actresses who are the faces of the films, but also the cast and crew behind them without whom the film would not even exist. These awards congratulate specific aspects of films, bringing the attention to an awe-inspiring aspect, such as cinematography or musical score.

The Golden Globes are known for, among many things, their hosts, this year of which were the comedic duo Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. The two expertly pulled off their jobs, filling the night with laughs and jabs at celebrities present. One particularly noteworthy moment was their opening dialogue where they introduced George Clooney, winner of the Lifetime Achievement award, right after listing the numerous political accomplishments his new wife, Amal Clooney, had seen this past year alone.

From this year, movies nominated included the widely-known The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Theory of Everything, along with lesser known but critically-acclaimed titles as Boyhood and Selma. Boyhood is a movie that has been 12 years in the making and Selma, produced by Oprah Winfrey, is about continued discrimination in the South after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These along with several others spent their time in the spotlight before the New Year has a chance to bring even more amazing movies.

The award for Best Drama Motion Picture went to Boyhood and Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical to The Grand Budapest Hotel. Until the Academy Awards come out, there remains a long list of movies to watch and acclaim for ourselves.
