Mexican Independence at Centennial

Did you know that the Huskies celebrated an important cultural holiday on September 15-16th? It was the Dia de Independencia, or Mexican Independence Day. Centennial High joined in the celebration by performing their annual Grito de Dolores, translated as the “Cry of Dolores”.

The Grito de Dolores was a speech uttered from a small town called Dolores on September 16th, 1810, that sparked the Mexican War of Independence against the Spanish. Every September 15th at midnight, the president of Mexico delivers the speech in an event. This speech was originally delivered by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Mexican Catholic priest and one of the leaders of the independence. The speech ends with the phrase “Viva Mexico!” (Long Live Mexico!) being shouted three times with the crowd yelling “Viva!” (Long Live) after each one.

Centennial’s Grito de Dolores event was held on September 16th in the Village. Colorful papel picado, paper cut out into designs, were hung from one side of the hallway to the other. A president, chosen from one of the Spanish classes, was selected to lead the speech and wave the flag of Mexico in the traditional event. All of the Spanish and French students that had class in that part of the Village participated in the event by responding to the “president” with “Viva!” throughout the speech. Afterwards, music was played and the Folklório Club wrapped the event up by participating in a traditional Mexican dance.Dia de Independencia 11Dia de Independencia 22
